U.S. incarcerates more than any other nation: report - Yahoo! News

The report by the Pew Center on the States said the American penal system held more than 2.3 million adults at the start of the year.

The far more populous nation of China ranked second with 1.5 million behind bars, with Russia a distant third with 890,000 inmates. (USA, USA... We're #1 ! snark!)

"Beyond the sheer number of inmates, America also is the global leader in the rate at which it incarcerates its citizenry, outpacing nations like South Africa and Iran," according to the report.

Tough sentencing laws, record numbers of drug offenders and high crime rates have contributed to the United States having the largest prison population and the highest rate of incarceration in the world, criminal justice experts say.

The failed "War on Drugs" is responsible for more than half of the current prison population.

http://corporatism.tripod.com/majority.htm#ma

And perhaps not surprisingly, over half of the people jailed on drug-related charges are in for simple possesion of "soft drugs" (Marijuana, Hashhish, Ecstacy, etc.).

As a nation we now spend more on prisons than on higher education.

It is past time that we overhaul the short-sighted drug policies that have led to this national embarassment.

Military Manpower Shortfall

Received a troubling E-Mail from an old shipmate today.

He's 56, last active duty 1975, retired from Naval Reserve 1999, Ready Reserve (like me) since.

He's been called back for active duty with the National Guard! After some quick training in Florida, he will report to Iraq later this spring to serve as an MP for 12 to 15 months.

Things are going so well in Iraq that an old salt, whose specialty is instrument optics, who is less than 10 years from Medicare, is to go overseas and carry a gun in a freakin' war zone!

Does this mean the Chimpster-in-Chief will be joining the fray next February? He still owes some service time, as I reckon. Hey, Georgie! Gonna join in the fun? Ya AWOL bastard.

I can shred the Bill of Rights, enrich my corporate masters, take the country into an illegal war, pollute the planet, jail anyone without charge, illegally torture prisoners, disenfranchise entire classes of citizens, ignore the law and courts, evade military service, diminish America's standing in the world, ad infinitum.....

Threats of violence toward Obama & his supporters

I wonder if this is something that the Secret Service should be made aware of?

I won't link to it because the authors don't deserve the hits, however, in a YouTube video with the disgusting title "Barack and Michelle Obama Supporters are Retards", one finds in the comments section a discussion about how much fun it would be to sit on a hill (adult carrot?) and take pot shots at Obama and his supporters with a "sniper rifle" and an "AR-15".

I'm a huge fan of the First Ammendment but are violent threats protected speech?

Are threats of violence ever funny?

Perhaps a sign of the right's desperation, definitely an indicator of the lack of decency of some on the Web, but most assuredly a sign of small, angry minds. Imagine the outcry from the Wingnuts if a liberal poster laughed at the idea of shooting Mr 19% and his fans.

Court rejects ACLU challenge to wiretaps - Yahoo! News

.....ACLU officials described the situation as a "Catch-22" because the government says the identities of people whose communications have been intercepted is secret. But only people who know they have been wiretapped can sue over the program.

A lawsuit filed by an Islamic charity met a similar fate. The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals last year ruled against the Oregon-based U.S. arm of the Al-Haramain Islamic Foundation, concluding that a key piece of evidence is protected as a state secret.

In that case, the charity alleged the National Security Agency illegally listened to its calls. The charity had wanted to introduce as evidence a top-secret call log it received mistakenly from the Treasury Department.

The Looming Banking Collapse

Mon Feb 18, 9:09 PM ET

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Banks in the United States have been quietly borrowing "massive amounts" from the U.S. Federal Reserve in recent weeks, using a new measure the Fed introduced two months ago to help ease the credit crunch, according to a report on the web site of The Financial Times.

The newspaper said the use of the Fed's Term Auction Facility (TAF), which allows banks to borrow at relatively attractive rates against a wide range of their assets, saw borrowing of nearly $50 billion of one-month funds from the Fed by mid-February.

The Financial Times said the move has sparked unease among some analysts about the stress developing in opaque corners of the U.S. banking system and the banks' growing reliance on indirect forms of government support.

(Reporting by Mark McSherry; Editing by Valerie Lee)

From Jim Kunstler, Clusterfuck Nation,
.... And after another while, the nature of money became so detached from anything real, so abstract, that its very existence became hypothetical. Even this "worked" for a while, in terms of the managers of this money being able to "cream" substantial amounts of this hypothetical money off the top of their notional operations and translate that hypothetical cream into Tribeca lofts, Gulfstream jets, and other real luxuries. The rest of the economic food chain -- and the social order that represented it -- got stripped of remaining asset value (and social value) until they had nothing left to trade with except debt, in one form or another, and this phase of the game turned out to have a short lifetime when the the only debts remaining to be monetized were the contracts on houses occupied by people with no hope of ever meeting their obligations -- and then the whole sorry racket started to go up in a vapor. This is roughly where we are, and where the banks stand today. They are pretending to have money and desperately cadging loans from all comers to keep appearances up, but the loans can't come in fast enough. The appearance of confidence is crucial (as it is, of course, in any "con" game) to keep the investors (depositors) at bay. If a bunch of investors (depositors) all got nervous about the solvency of a given bank, they might try to slip in there during business hours and withdraw or redeem their "money" and perhaps translate it into items of value like gold coins, bottles of vodka, or cases of 9 millimeter pistol ammunition. And if enough of this bunch showed up at the same time, we would see a phenomenon called a "run" on a bank. And after that started at one bank, the thing Franklin Roosevelt called "fear itself" could easily spread to depositers in other banks pretending to be OK... and that would be the magic moment that the USA discovered it was no longer a rich nation."

This is just the tip of the iceberg. The whole house of cards is poised to come down around our ears. McCain might get his hundred years war. Over food, fuel, shrinking land masses, religious fanatacism... the list grows and grows. Who in their right mind would want to be President?

Sweet dreams, catch you later.....

BBC NEWS Europe Iranians urge Dutch to ban film

And:

Danish MPs refuse cartoon apology
By Thomas Buch-Andersen BBC News, Copenhagen:

Danish MPs have cancelled a trip to Iran after Tehran demanded they apologise for the republication of cartoons deemed offensive to Islam.

Two days before the scheduled trip, Tehran demanded the MPs condemn the cartoon on their arrival in Iran.

The row follows the arrest on Tuesday of three men for allegedly planning to murder cartoonist Kurt Westergaard.

The following day, 11 Danish papers reprinted his drawing depicting the Prophet with a bomb in his turban.

A condemnation and apology would help convince the Iranian people that Denmark's authorities had distanced themselves from the action, Iran's parliament said in a letter to Danish MPs.

If anyone needs to apologise... it is the Iranians Villy Soevndal, Danish MP

Nine members of Denmark's foreign affairs committee were due to arrive in Iran on Monday for a three-day trip focusing on human rights and the Islamic Republic's nuclear programme.

"We are not the ones to apologise," said Villy Soevndal, the leader of Denmark's Socialist People's Party.

"If anyone needs to apologise for freedom of speech, human rights, imprisonments, executions and lack of democracy, it is the Iranians."

Denmark's foreign minister has backed the parliamentarians' decision not to travel.

Jeebus + Guns: OY! US military accused of harboring fundamentalism.

This is the kind of crap that really scares the Be-jeebus out of me.

It (lawsuit) alleges a "pernicious pattern and practice" of infringement of religious liberties in the military.

The group's founder, former Air Force lawyer Mikey Weinstein, said he has documented 6,800 testimonies by military personnel -- nearly all of them Christians -- of sometimes punitive or humiliating attempts to make them accept a fundamentalist evangelical interpretation of Christianity.

"I am at war with those people who would create a fundamentalist Christian theocracy in the technologically most lethal organization ever created by our species, which is the United States armed forces," he said.

He plans to add extra charges and possibly other lawsuits this month.

"It violates title seven of the US code for an employer to push their Biblical world view on an employee," he said. "But it's a trillion times worse when that is not just your shift manager at Starbucks but that is your military superior."

He singles out one of the major Christian groups in the military, the Officers Christian Fellowship (OCF).

This kind of crap was going on when I served 35 some years ago. It was and is bad enough in the South where I spent the bulk of my time but it's worse now according to friends who are still serving, especially in the Air Force and more so at the Air Force Academy, conveniently located in Ted Haggard's old neighborhood.

Tuesday's FISA vote goes to show, quite emphatically, that we need not just more Dems in Congress, but REAL Dems, Progressives, DFL'rs.

Minority Repugs have sufficiently neutered an adequate number of DINOs so that, though GOP policies are rejected my a clear majority of this nation's citizens, acts condoning criminality can get passed into law in the "World's Greatest Deliberative Body". An outrage!

But where is the wide spread condemnation? Where is the press?

Gotta call my Senators, Again...

Here we go, again. Telecom immunity will prove for once and for all the spinelessness of Senate Democrats. Glenn Greenwald - Political Blogs and Opinions - Salon, as usual, has a fine post on tomorrow's stakes:

There is an honest way to argue in favor of telecom amnesty, and it is, of course, exactly what amnesty advocates like the WSJ, Andy McCarthy, Jay Rockefeller and the rest of them desperately avoid. This is the only honest case one can make for this radical gift to telecoms:

Yes, telecoms violated multiple federal laws by enabling government spying on Americans and turning over communications data without warrants. They broke these laws not only in the aftermath of 9/11, but for years and years. By breaking these laws, they reaped enormous financial profits, as the Government paid them huge fees for their cooperation in the illegal spying program. Despite their having broken multiple federal laws and having committed felonies -- while reaping great profits in the process -- they ought to be granted retroactive amnesty and immunized from any consequences for their lawbreaking, otherwise they may be reluctant to break our laws in the future.

Why is this so hard for Senate Dems to get? If I keep calling Diane we'll be on a first name basis in no time. But will she finally get it?
