Disturbing Right-Wing Comments re: Tenn. Church Shootings

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (July 28) -- An unemployed man accused of opening fire with a shotgun and killing two people at a Unitarian church apparently targeted the congregation out of hatred for its liberal social policies, police said Monday.

This report of the church shootings in Tenn. from AOL has the following in the comment thread:

The gunman believed he was carrying out God's will against a church established in direct contradiction to Biblical values. Although I do not endorse his actions, I can understand why he was appalled by its endorsement of the gay lifestyle. It's truly a wonder that this doesn't happen more frequently in our decadent mraol society.

Sunday Funnies

From a couple of years ago but an excellent example of the chronically obtuse mentation that vexes folks like the esteemed Prof. P.Z. Myers, Richard Dawkins and so many others.

Unintentionally humorous yet chilling, especially in light of the ongoing efforts of these wack-a-loons to weaken, even destroy true scientific inquiry.

Objects of derision? Yes. Laughing-stocks? Certainly. Dangerous? Yah, sure, you betcha!

That last is for the Minnisota crew. Keep after them!

Katie Couric - Serious Journalist?

SusanG at DailyKos has a nice take on the shameless, partisan abandonment of journalistic standards and ethics at CBS.

Here in SoCal, satellite TV means we see KO on MSNBC before the CBS Evening News, so of course I was going over to see how the Big Eye's west coast feed would play.

And yes, KO, Susan G, et al were quite spot on. Katie's in the tank for McLame.

But what shocked was what preceeded the McLame piece.

WHAT the hell was that performance with Obama all about? She wouldn't stop trying to pull a Gotcha' on Obama, coming back over and over again to a simplistic, illogical either/or choice regarding the surge.

Bush: 'Our Long National Nightmare Of Peace And Prosperity Is Finally Over' | The Onion - America's Finest News Source

I'm sure that when published on January 17th, 2001, the editors of the Onion felt they were writing humorously:

A few excerpts:

WASHINGTON, DC–Mere days from assuming the presidency and closing the door on eight years of Bill Clinton, president-elect George W. Bush assured the nation in a televised address Tuesday that "our long national nightmare of peace and prosperity is finally over." ...

...Bush swore to do "everything in [his] power" to undo the damage wrought by Clinton's two terms in office, including selling off the national parks to developers, going into massive debt to develop expensive and impractical weapons technologies, and passing sweeping budget cuts that drive the mentally ill out of hospitals and onto the street....

..."You better believe we're going to mix it up with somebody at some point during my administration," said Bush, who plans a 250 percent boost in military spending. "Unlike my predecessor, I am fully committed to putting soldiers in battle situations. Otherwise, what is the point of even having a military?"...

...Turning to the subject of the environment, Bush said he will do whatever it takes to undo the tremendous damage not done by the Clinton Administration to the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge. He assured citizens that he will follow through on his campaign promise to open the 1.5 million acre refuge's coastal plain to oil drilling. As a sign of his commitment to bringing about a change in the environment, he pointed to his choice of Gale Norton for Secretary of the Interior. Norton, Bush noted, has "extensive experience" fighting environmental causes, working as a lobbyist for lead-paint manufacturers and as an attorney for loggers and miners, in addition to suing the EPA to overturn clean-air standards....

..."Finally, the horrific misrule of the Democrats has been brought to a close," House Majority Leader Dennis Hastert (R-IL) told reporters. "Under Bush, we can all look forward to military aggression, deregulation of dangerous, greedy industries, and the defunding of vital domestic social-service programs upon which millions depend. Mercifully, we can now say goodbye to the awful nightmare that was Clinton's America."...

..."We as a people must stand united, banding together to tear this nation in two," Bush said. "Much work lies ahead of us: The gap between the rich and the poor may be wide, be there's much more widening left to do. We must squander our nation's hard-won budget surplus on tax breaks for the wealthiest 15 percent. And, on the foreign front, we must find an enemy and defeat it."

Go read the whole thing. What was thought an attempt at hyperbole was more than seven years later shown to be a frighteningly accurate prophecy. Or is the Onion evil?

U.S. oil firms seek drilling access, but exports soar | Reuters

By Tom Doggett - Analysis

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - While the U.S. oil industry wants access to more federal lands to help reduce reliance on foreign suppliers, American-based companies are shipping record amounts of gasoline and diesel fuel to other countries.

A record 1.6 million barrels a day in U.S. refined petroleum products were exported during the first four months of this year, up 33 percent from 1.2 million barrels a day over the same period in 2007. Shipments this February topped 1.8 million barrels a day for the first time during any month, according to final numbers from the Energy Department.

The surge in exports appears to contradict the pleas from the U.S. oil industry and the Bush administration for Congress to open more offshore waters and Alaska's Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling.

"We can help alleviate shortages by drilling for oil and gas in our own country," President Bush told reporters this week. "We have got the opportunity to find more crude oil here at home."

"As a nation, we can have more control over our energy destiny by supplying more of the oil and natural gas we'll be consuming from resources here at home," Red Cavaney, president of the American Petroleum Institute, said in a letter last week to U.S. lawmakers.

But environmentalists and other opponents to expanding drilling areas could seize on the record exports to argue Congress should not open more acres if U.S. refineries are churning crude oil into petroleum products that are sent out of the American market.

"It doesn't look good to say: 'We need more oil.' But then export the refined products that you're getting. It doesn't seem to be consistent," said Jim Presswood, energy lobbyist for the Natural Resources Defense Council....

Do you think that oil speculators and multi-national oil companies give a rat's ass about America's economic difficulties? Not when there's profit to be made.

How about the claims that refining capacity is down because 'the Dems' won't allow more refineries to be built?

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A dramatic slowdown in U.S. gasoline demand in the midst of record pump prices has forced refining companies in the world's top energy consumer to curb output at a time of year they normally produce at full throttle.

The untimely production cuts during the peak driving summer season are another sign of the pain inflicted by record energy costs on U.S. consumers and businesses, already hard-hit by a housing slump and credit crisis, experts said....

Curbing output and exporting ever larger amounts of refined petroleum products while hollering to drill in sensitive environments and give further tax breaks to the oil companies makes it pretty clear who BushCo and the GOP really consider their true constituency.

President George W Bush backs Israeli plan for strike on Iran - Times Online

"President George W Bush has told the Israeli government that he may be prepared to approve a future military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities if negotiations with Tehran break down, according to a senior Pentagon official.

Despite the opposition of his own generals and widespread scepticism that America is ready to risk the military, political and economic consequences of an airborne strike on Iran, the president has given an “amber light” to an Israeli plan to attack Iran’s main nuclear sites with long-range bombing sorties, the official told The Sunday Times...."

Woman kills husband with folding couch - Reuters

By Denis Pinchuk

ST PETERSBURG (Reuters) - A Russian woman in St Petersburg killed her drunk husband with a folding couch, Russian media reported on Wednesday.

St Petersburg's Channel Five said the man's wife, upset with her husband for being drunk and refusing to get up, kicked a handle after an argument, activating a mechanism that folds the couch up against a wall.

The couch, which doubles as a bed, folds up automatically in order to save space. The man fell between the mattress and the back of the couch, Channel Five quoted emergency workers as saying.

The woman then walked out of the room and returned three hours later to check on what she thought was an unusually quiet sleeping husband.

Police refused to comment.

The St Petersburg Emergency Services Ministry said a private rescue service removed the man's body.

Video on the television channel's website showed emergency workers sawing away the side panels of a couch to remove a man in his underwear lying headfirst between the cushions.

Emergency workers said the man died instantly.

What a Day...

Well, this was one of those days...

The patient load was heavy, the Dr. was cranky and the front office seemed paralyzed by... well, whatever. It was Friday.

And then I heard one that takes the cake.

A person new to our office remarked, "You're busier than a one-armed paper-hanger."

Pause.....

"You know, I got fired two years ago for saying that."

I begged his pardon, glanced at the chart and saw he was an IT professional.

"Yup, got fired from (Un-named Software Giant)."

Naturally I was all WTF?

"Yup. Said I was insensitive to the disabled. Pissed off some guy in a wheelchair, he complained to Human Resources and I was gone in less than a week."

Weren't you angry, didn't you do something about it? I asked.

"Nope. Got hired by their main rival within the week for more money. Screw 'em."

You know, despite the fact that everything worked out for him, seems to me that this is another good example of PC run amok. People, lighten up, fer gawdsakes!

Dear Barack, You've let us down...(is there a difference?)

Dear Barack

My enthusiasm wanes

Now, FISA

Before, Capital Punishment

And then , faith-based B.S.?!?

Gun control...

Death Penalty...

What's next? Problems with Roe v. Wade?

Time to re-read the first ten amendments to our Constitution. That is what is at stake.

For the first time in a generation, a democrat can safely run on Democratic Principles with no fear of condemnation, no need to run to the center. Here we are, Democrats, this is what we are, what we stand for, at a time when principles are what the electorate calls out for. Change is what is most desired.

And then you cave, after a promise! The FISA vote will go into the history books as a black day for democracy,

These days, one only needs to see where the overwhelming majority of Americans want to go and then get out in front. At this time in our history, leadership should be easy. Get with the program, ride the wave, enjoy the ride and never forget who got you there.

Don't make me wish Hillary had prevailed. Neither you nor she were my first, second, or even third choice. If, however, in the end she should prove to have bigger balls than yours, well, my face will be red.

Show us you stand for something, before we conclude you are just another politician who stands for nothing, except getting elected.

The opportunity before you has not existed in my lifetime since JFK. Real change is do-able if courage is yours. The risk for you is not really so great. The risk for our country looms much larger. Courage, Sir, Courage. Principles matter. Your legacy has already begun, don't sully it any further.

Dennis Kucinich: Independence Day: Let Us Remember Who We Are

Adherence to the Constitution? What a novel idea! I wonder if it will catch on in Washington, DC?

Probably not, there's no way for the powers that be to profit from it.

God damn, I'm so jaded.

My enthusiasm for the Democratic nominee fades by the day, but the alternative is so much worse.

I'll be holding my nose while voting again this cycle.
