After reading the recent publications over the decision of the principal of Danvers High School banning students from saying the word “Meep,” Entertainment lawyer Theodora Michaels decided to act and wrote a letter using the four-letter word to Principal Thomas Murray, who comes across as a high school version of Dean Vernon Wormer from Animal House. She was immediately reported to the police for investigation by the school.

State Media and Public Access to Polling Places

Note: This chart lists state laws regulating media and public access to polling places. In practice, access may vary significantly from
jurisdiction to jurisdiction.

California:

Only poll workers and voters actively engaged in voting may be within the voting booth area, but members of the public may be in the polling place to observe provided they do not interfere with the voting process.

Observers may ask poll workers questions regarding election procedures so long as they do not distract them from their duties.

Voters may not be photographed, videotaped or filmed entering or exiting a polling place or within a polling place without their explicit permission.

Some counties and jurisdictions have different regulations but the state policy regarding media and pollsters requires them to be at least 25 feet from the polling place before speaking to voters. 35 (emphasis mine.)

So, I voted today. At lunchtime, here at the old "Branch Cascadian" compound. (Don't ask.)

Bad day at work, but at the end I thought I would visit the clubhouse where the voting was taking place to ask the nice young man I had seen earlier how the turn-out had been, what impressions he might have formed, etc. (He seemed progressive.) I said I had a little blog and just wanted to report about one small slice of the vote. It was 30 or so minutes before the polls closed.

Well, another poll worker, a fellow "Branch Cascadian" got her damn panties in a twist and she and another of the ladies behind the cafeteria tables demanded I leave. Some weird guy with a ton of 3G gear got busy on the phone.

I managed to exchange e-mail addresses with the seemingly nice young man before I was hounded out. As I left, it seemed that my answer to her inquiry, "What blog?" pissed her off further.

I went home, changed out of my work clothes, and walked back down to the clubhouse/polling place, popping in the back (unlocked) door at precisely 8:02pm. I felt like trying again.

Well, you would have thought some felony was being committed. It was "polls are closed" this and "clubhouse is closed" that (by now they had the compound manager involved in the effort to keep me from observing). My god, you'd have thought I was subverting the whole vote, for fuck sake. At no time did I interfere with the voting procedures or the duties of any poll worker.

I reminded our commandant and the objecting poll workers and anyone in listening distance that I, as a citizen, a voter and especially as a disabled Veteran, had a right to observe. The G3 phone guy ran for the hills as I was hounded out by little old ladies for the second time.

Didn't seem worth it any more.

The U.S. wastes more on health care bureaucracy than it would cost to provide health care to all of the uninsured. Administrative expenses will consume at least $399.4 billion out of total health expenditures of $1,660.5 billion in 2003. Streamlining administrative overhead to Canadian levels would save approximately $286.0 billion in 2003, $6,940 for each of the 41.2 million Americans who were uninsured as of 2001. This is substantially more than would be needed to provide full insurance coverage....

...Only a single payer national health insurance system could garner these massive administrative savings, allowing universal coverage without any increase in total health spending. Because incremental reforms necessarily preserve the current fragmented and duplicative payment structure they cannot achieve significant bureaucratic savings....

...Conclusion

In 2003 the U.S. will spend $399.4 billion ($1,389 per capita) on health bureaucracy, out of total expenditures of $1660.5 billion ($5,775 per capita). The states could save $286.0 billion dollars in 2003 if they streamlined administration to Canadian levels by adopting a single-payer national health insurance system. The potential savings are equivalent to at least $6,940 for each of the 41.6 million Americans uninsured in 2001.

These potential administrative savings are far higher than recent estimates of the cost of covering the uninsured. For instance researchers from The Urban Institute estimate that covering all of America's uninsured with an "average" private insurance policy would cost $69 billion annually (Hadley and Holahan, Health Affairs, May/June, 2003). Thus, the $286.0 billion in administrative savings could cover all of the uninsured, with $217 billion left over to upgrade coverage for Americans who are currently under-insured - e.g. to offer first dollar drug coverage to seniors.

At our clinic, we spend fully 60+% of our non-physician hours just trying to make sense of the mess that is the American Health Insurance system. I've been griping about this for years.

When I think of all the good the wasted dollars could do, I get just a wee bit PISSED OFF!

Many of the doctors I know are finally coming around on the issue of single payer.

Why can't the pols see enormous upside to a national public system?

Mr. Obama, why is Single Payer off the table?

...These cover sheets greeted Bush each day with triumphal color photos of the war headlined by biblical quotations. GQ is posting 11 of them, and they are seriously creepy.

Take the one dated April 3, 2003, two weeks into the invasion, just as Shock and Awe hit its first potholes. Two days earlier, on April 1, a panicky Pentagon had begun spreading its hyped, fictional account of the rescue of Pvt. Jessica Lynch to distract from troubling news of setbacks. On April 2, Gen. Joseph Hoar, the commander in chief of the United States Central Command from 1991-94, had declared on the Times Op-Ed page that Rumsfeld had sent too few troops to Iraq. And so the Worldwide Intelligence Update for April 3 bullied Bush with Joshua 1:9: “Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the LORD your God will be with you wherever you go.” (Including, as it happened, into a quagmire.)

What’s up with that? As Draper writes, Rumsfeld is not known for ostentatious displays of piety. He was cynically playing the religious angle to seduce and manipulate a president who frequently quoted the Bible. But the secretary’s actions were not just oily; he was also taking a risk with national security. If these official daily collages of Crusade-like messaging and war imagery had been leaked, they would have reinforced the Muslim world’s apocalyptic fear that America was waging a religious war. As one alarmed Pentagon hand told Draper, the fallout “would be as bad as Abu Ghraib.”

Rumsfeld would waterboard Jesus if he thought it would serve his purposes.

One could make a pretty compelling argument that the biggest upset of 2008 at the presidential level, bigger than even the Obama victory in Indiana, was the fact that Barack Obama stole an electoral vote from John McCain in, of all places, Nebraska.

I'm pretty proud of my peeps. And now there's more:

Tuesday night, the Democratic Party, and the voters of Omaha, made it clear that Obama's surprise single electoral vote in Nebraska was not an isolated incident.

Democrat Jim Suttle, a city councilman, scored the narrow win over former Republican mayor Hal Daub. Suttle won 50.7% of the vote, to Daub's 48.7% of the vote.

...In the same election, voters elected a city council that will, for the first time in two decades, have a Democratic majority. Four of the city's seven council seats went to Democrats.

Back in the dark ages (my high school years, the 60's), Omaha was a Democratic stronghold, albeit of the Prendergast variety. Irish catholic mayors (vote Quimby!), Italian catholic council members, career bureaucrats, police, etc. The spirit of Jack and Bobby was strong.

We picketed the hell out of George Wallace, demanded an end to war, protested the pants off Nixon, cheered like crazy for Gene McCarthy and gave the '68 primary to Bobby.

And then all hell broke loose, Nixon scared the crap out of the suburbs and Omaha went over to the Dark Side.

Well, as has been said, and this, too, shall pass. Congratulations, Obamaha, you've made a native son very proud.

I just finished watching Mr. Obama on Leno out here in Pacific Daylight Time land. I had been forewarned by Rachel and Keith and several wing-nut websites that our president had made a faux pas vis-a-vis the Special Olympics. Something about his abysmal bowling skills.

As a former Special Olympics volunteer, dedicated to the memory of my late sister Kathy (severely mentally retarded, challenged, whatever) I'm especially attuned to BS in this area.

Some say I'm overly sensitive.

My take on this, after viewing for myself, is; "So What!"

I'm not offended and I'm sure I speak for my family, none of whom bowl worth a shit I might add, and I find this a tempest in a teapot.

At a typical Special Olympics bowling prelim, our president would finish in the middle of the pack with a 129. So what!?!

You just know that Michelle or Drudge or Rush or Billo or Calamity will make something of this.

Well, I lived and breathed it and I say "fuck 'em".

The rats are cold and hungry. The skunks have a den somewhere next door, where the metal shed was dismantled. Opossums, raccoons and lizards have colonized the abandoned yards on my block in Riverside. And it's spooky, at night, to see so much darkness, to hear skittering, to keep an eye out for homeless people trying to break in and sleep, to listen for the sounds of desperate humans and animals...."

I pass through Riverside county semi-frequently, usually on I-15, and the changes of just the last two or three years are astonishing. Go read the whole, haunting piece and get a first-hand account of the birth of a ghost town.

And these are soccer moms and dads, mostly professionals, with good educations, valuable skills, an abiding belief in the American Dream, who played by the rules and were played in return.

Meanwhile, he's appointed as his health reform czar Nancy-Ann DeParle, a woman who has made her living advising health care investors and sits on the board of many for-profit firms that have made billions from Medicare. Her appointment - and the invitation list to the health care summit - is a clear signal that the administration plans to propose a corporate-friendly health reform that has no chance of actually solving our health care crisis."

This is very bad news.

I have worked as a health-care professional for over 35 years.

It has become my opinion over time that Single-Payer is the only thing that will save our health care system.

People who do not share this opinion tend to be the very folks who profit from the current rats nest of payers, options, coverage levels, charge-backs, write-offs, bureaucratic mazes, service denials and so many other non-medical devices meant to carve a slice out of the pie and privatize it into some one's wallet (or Swiss account).

From where I sit it seems so simple:

Expand the Medicare system to include all American citizens and fund it from payroll taxes.

The Veteran's Administration Health Care system was a terrific model of the efficiencies until Bush and his Iraq blunder and funding cuts broke it. (Seven years ago I could call and get a non-emergency appointment in less than a couple of weeks, now it can take six months to a year or more. Heckuva job, Georgie!)

Take the insurance monkey off the backs of employers. Free employers from the cost of this benefit: productivity and competitiveness are improved.

If this isn't good enough for you and yours and you can afford it, by all means, seek fee-for-service private health care. It will remain your right. Just no "opting-out". We're all in this together, it's for the good of the country and a shared burden will lessen the cost per enrollee.

And in a private practice like the ours, we will be able to practice medicine full-time again rather than spend as much as 50% of non-physician hours fighting with insurance issues. The resulting decrease in overhead would have a marvelous effect on our bottom line. (Raise, plz?)

In our present system we've seen premiums rise drastically, co-pays increase, reimbursement go down, access be denied and third party payers building private fortunes. This is no way to run an equitable health system.

I'm very disappointed in President Obama's stance. If he were to make a choice other than Single-Payer after giving it due consideration that would be one thing. But to choose to give it no consideration whatsoever is inexcusable.

Think again, Mr. Obama, for the health of the nation.

Sounds fishy to me. Imagine what single-payer could do with $79 per patient!

Dad and I have an Excellent Adventure

I spent the day with my father (a WWII Naval Aviator) aboard the USS Midway CVN-41, now a museum on the Navy Pier here in San Diego.

It was quite a day for me. And Dad, too, I think.

The picture above was taken in the "Goat Locker", the Chief's Mess.

It is a special table. It is the POW/MIA table.

The sign reads as follows:

This table is a place of honor.

Its solitary setting is a reminder that some of those who defend our country are no longer among us.

The table is small to symbolize the frailty of one prisoner against his oppressors.

The tablecloth is white to symbolize the purity of intention to heed their country's call to arms.

The single rose in the vase reminds us of the families and loved ones who keep the faith awaiting our comrades-in-arms' return.

The red ribbon attests to the unyielding determination of thousands who demand a proper accounting of our missing.

The lemon slice upon the bread plate reminds us of their bitter fate.

The salt upon the bread plate is symbolic of their families' tears as they wait.

The glass is inverted as they cannot toast with us tonight.

The seat is empty for those who are not here.

REMEMBER.

Two old sailors, father and son, back upon a naval vessel, for the first time in 64 and 34 years respectively. It was a 'heavy' day.

And the sight of that table is what touched me most after Dad and I parted.

I paused in reflection of a few guys I knew and the thousands I did not.

The sacrifices of so many patriotic men and women over our history.

I am humbled, proud to be an American, proud to have served and proud to be my father's son.

Fun With Ditto-Heads

During the run-up to the election, Kevin, our mail carrier at the office, and I had a lot of fun driving the Ditto-head in the cubicle next to his crazy with graphics from the toobz.

I would print out something guaranteed to drive the Ditto-head to the brink, like Tom Tomorrow's excellent strip or my latest "Honest McCain Campaign Poster" and Kevin would take it in, tape it to their common divider and wait for hilarity to ensue.

His description of D.H.'s meltdowns the day after were terrific entertainment.

Kevin tells us that since Election day, D.H. has been sullen and withdrawn.

That ended yesterday. Kevin came in to find a headline clipped from our local right-wing cage-liner:

was the headline and the note attached said "nice president".

Kevin reported that D.H. was quite pleased with himself and our President's recent mis-steps.

I copied the clipping and note and sent it back with an observation or two:

"Wow. I'm impressed! A president smart enough to recognize a mistake when he sees one. And man enough to own up to it. What a refreshing change!

After eight years of gob-smackingly stupid errors, mistakes, lies and colossal fuck-ups, all aWol could come up with was 'Mission Accomplished' and Bring It On'.

Not only is Bush not man enough to admit a mistake, he has not mind enough to see one.

Stick with the GOP and it's new chairman, Rash Limpballs. It's really working out for ya', you betcha.

Give me Palin and the Plumber in 2012 and the GOP will be as relevant as the Whigs."

I don't usually reveal sources, but I think this is incredibly important. Michael Connell died in a plane crash last night. He was a key witness in the Ohio election fraud case that I have been reporting on. More importantly, however, he had information that he was ready to share.
You see, Mike Connell set-up the alternate email and communications system for the White House. He was responsible for creating the system that hosted the infamous GWB43.com accounts that Karl Rove and others used. When asked by Congress to provide these emails, the White House said that they were destroyed. But in reality, what Connell is alleged to have done is move these files to other servers after having allegedly scrubbed the files from all "known" Karl Rove accounts.

Will Bush pardon Cheney, resign, and then be pardoned by Cheney in turn? At this point nothing would surprise me. Their entire criminal enterprise should be thoroughly investigated, prosecuted and severely punished. America needs to see that the rule of law still lives.

Think it will happen? Nah, me neither.

Barack Obama's decision to have Rick Warren deliver the invocation at his inauguration will surely be greeted by many as the triumph of bipartisanship and post-partisan politics.

Predictably, this move is sure to anger some of Obama's base who might view having an Evangelical pro-Life Pastor play such a prominent role in Obama's inauguration as a slap in the face.

... But there is another group who is likely to view this move with suspicion: Traditional conservatives. (In fact, a quick perusal of the conservatives I'm following on Twitter confirms this.)...

...While this move will surely be applauded by the center, in one fell swoop, Obama and Warren have found a way to anger many on the left and on the right.

Anything that pisses off conservatives and fundies is OK by me. And I'll be hitting the mute button while throwing shoes at his graven image.
